Shopify Sidekick and AI Tools: What Merchants Can Actually Use Today

Sidekick can now build admin apps, write ShopifyQL and act inside partner apps. Here's where it saves real time, and where you still need a human.

Shopify has added AI to almost every corner of the admin, and the marketing makes it sound like the store will run itself. It won't, but some of these tools now save real hours every week. This is a field guide for founders and ecommerce managers who want to know which Shopify AI features are worth using today, which ones need guardrails, and which jobs still belong to a person.

Key takeaways

  • Sidekick is Shopify's AI assistant in the admin. It's included with Shopify plans, and features and usage limits vary by plan. It can analyze data, edit products, write content, build simple admin apps and act inside some partner apps.
  • Sidekick always asks for approval before it changes your store, and it can't talk to your customers.
  • Shopify's Help Center now groups the older "Shopify Magic" features (text generation, image editing, suggested categories) under AI-powered tools and Sidekick.
  • The best uses are analysis, bulk content drafts, setup guidance and small internal tools. The worst uses are anything where a confident wrong answer costs money: pricing, legal copy, tax and compliance.

Sidekick vs "Shopify Magic": a quick naming note

When Shopify introduced its generative AI features in 2023, it branded them Shopify Magic. Today, the Help Center's AI page describes Sidekick and a set of built-in AI features, and the "Generate text" icon in product descriptions and emails is powered by Sidekick. You will still see "Shopify Magic" in older articles and some apps. In practice, think of it this way: Sidekick is the assistant you talk to, and the AI features are the buttons built into specific screens.

What Sidekick can do today

According to Shopify's Help Center and recent changelog entries, Sidekick can:

  • Answer questions about your store's data, including writing ShopifyQL queries for web performance, payments, fulfillment and payout data (added January 2026).
  • Manage orders and edit products from plain-language instructions, presenting the changes for your review.
  • Create content: product descriptions, blog posts, online store pages, Shopify Messaging emails, images and custom theme blocks.
  • Run longer tasks in the background and notify you when they're ready to review.
  • Generate custom admin apps from a description (more on limits below).
  • Work with partner apps. Shopify's Spring '26 Edition says Sidekick can answer questions and take actions in apps "starting with" Judge.me, Klaviyo and Loop.
  • Guide checkout and customer account configuration (added October 13, 2026).
  • Build Shopify Flow automations and test events, and create customers and companies from a description.
  • Surface recommendations through Sidekick Pulse on your admin home page, and remember past conversations so you can save prompts as reusable skills.

You can use it from any admin page on desktop, in the Shopify mobile app, by voice and with screen sharing, plus quick voice questions on Apple Watch. It isn't available in the admin through a mobile browser.

What it can't (or shouldn't) do

Shopify is explicit about some limits:

  • Sidekick can't make changes without your approval. It proposes; you confirm.
  • It can't talk to customers or handle support conversations. For customer-facing AI, Shopify Inbox has suggested replies, and there are third-party apps.
  • It can't share private information or data from other merchants.
  • Shopify's AI features page warns that "AI outputs can contain errors, so review anything a tool creates or changes."

The approval step is the important safety net. The failure mode I see most often is fatigue: someone approves a 200-product bulk edit without opening a single product to check it.

The other built-in AI tools

Beyond Sidekick, Shopify lists AI in specific screens:

SimGym (Spring '26)ThemesAI-simulated shoppers that review a theme and suggest fixesTreat suggestions as hypotheses, not test results

Shopify says many of these features are available at no additional cost, but availability "can vary by plan, device, and language."

App generation: useful, with real limits

Sidekick can build a custom app from a description, for example "a page that lists orders over a certain value that haven't shipped in three days, with a button to tag them." Per Shopify's Help Center:

  • It's available only on the Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus plans, and only from a desktop browser.
  • Generated apps can only use the Admin API (orders, products, customers, discounts, content, analytics). They work only inside the admin and can't touch themes, checkout or customer accounts.
  • Usage limits apply hourly and weekly, shared across everyone on the store.
  • Generated apps can change real data, so Shopify tells you to test before installing.

This is a good fit for internal tools that would otherwise be a spreadsheet and a manual routine. It isn't a replacement for a properly built app when you need storefront features, integrations with outside systems, or code someone will maintain.

Where Sidekick earns its keep

From my own day-to-day use, these are the jobs where it saves the most time:

  1. "Why did X change?" questions. Ask about a drop in conversion or a spike in refunds, then check the query it wrote. Even when the answer is incomplete, the ShopifyQL gives you a starting point.
  2. Setup and settings guidance. Shipping profiles, markets, checkout settings: asking Sidekick is often faster than searching the Help Center, and it can take you to the right screen.
  3. Content first drafts at scale. Draft descriptions for a new collection, then edit. Feed it your real specs and brand voice notes first.
  4. Flow automations. Describe the trigger and outcome in plain language and let it build the workflow, then test it.
  5. Small internal apps. Order-review queues, inventory checks, tagging tools.

A safe operating routine

Before you let a team loose on AI tools, agree on a routine like this:

  1. Write down your source of truth. Product specs, sizing, materials, return window and shipping times live in one place (metafields work well). AI drafts must match it.
  2. Never let AI set prices or discounts unreviewed. Use it to model options, not to apply them.
  3. Spot-check bulk edits. For any change over 20 items, open at least five before and after approving.
  4. Keep legal and compliance copy human. Policies, claims about health, safety or materials, and anything regulated.
  5. Respect staff permissions. Sidekick follows each staff member's admin permissions, so don't give broad access just so someone can use AI.
  6. Log what AI changed. A short note in your team channel or the product's timeline helps when something looks off later.

Pro tip: Your product data does double duty now. The same clear, complete descriptions that make Sidekick drafts accurate are what AI shopping channels read. See our agentic commerce guide.

FAQ

Sidekick is included with Shopify plans, and Shopify says features and usage limits vary by plan. Some capabilities, such as app generation, are limited to the Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus plans.

Can Sidekick answer my customers' questions?

No. Shopify says Sidekick can't talk to customers or handle support conversations. Customer-facing AI comes from tools like Shopify Inbox suggestions or third-party apps.

Is Shopify Magic gone?

The name is used less. Shopify's Help Center now describes Sidekick and built-in AI-powered tools, and the text generation features that used to carry the Magic label are powered by Sidekick.

Can Sidekick change my theme?

It can generate custom theme blocks in the theme editor from a prompt, and help with content. It can't edit images in your theme, and apps it generates can't modify themes.

Does Sidekick work in languages other than English?

Shopify says Sidekick adapts to your store's language settings and can help in multiple languages. Some features, such as voice mode, launched with more limited language support, so check the Help Center for current coverage.

Next steps

Pick one recurring task this week, such as a weekly sales question, a product description batch or a Flow automation, and run it through Sidekick with the review routine above. If you want to check that your data and app stack are ready for more automation, start with an app stack audit, or book a Shopify consultation.
