If you run a Shopify store that sells to US customers, your products may already be showing up inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI surfaces, whether or not you set anything up. This guide is for founders and ecommerce managers who want to know what is actually live, what is still rolling out, and what to fix so AI agents describe and sell your products correctly.
Key takeaways
- Shopify's agentic storefronts sales channel is on by default for eligible stores and shares products with AI channels through Shopify Catalog. You manage it under Sales channels > Agentic in your admin.
- Checkout differs by channel. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout. Microsoft Copilot can complete the purchase inside the chat using a Shopify-powered checkout. Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout is limited to select brands for now.
- OpenAI scaled back its in-chat Instant Checkout in March 2026. Treat in-chat buying as early, and expect the rules to keep changing.
- The work that pays off now is unglamorous: complete product data, clear policies, accurate prices and inventory, and clean attribution.
What "agentic commerce" actually means
The term covers two different things, and it helps to keep them apart.
- AI-assisted discovery. A shopper asks an assistant for "a waterproof trail shoe under a certain budget," and the assistant recommends products, including yours. The purchase still happens on your site.
- Agent-completed checkout. The assistant (or an agent acting for the shopper) builds a cart and pays without the shopper ever loading your storefront. You still fulfill the order and stay the merchant of record.
Most of the real volume today is in the first bucket. The second is where the protocols and the headlines are, but adoption has been uneven, and that matters when you decide how much effort to spend.
What is live today (October 2026)
Here is where things stand, based on Shopify's Help Center, Shopify's own blog and the platforms' announcements. Shopify's Help Center and its blog don't always describe rollout status the same way, so check your own admin for what your store can use.
| AI channel | Status for Shopify merchants | Where the purchase happens | How your products get there |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | Live for merchants selling to US buyers, per Shopify | Your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Shopify Catalog |
| Microsoft Copilot | Live; direct checkout on by default for eligible stores | Inside Copilot, via Shopify-powered checkout (can be turned off) | Shopify Catalog |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini app | Select brands only; broader rollout described as underway | Native checkout powered by UCP for participating brands | Google & YouTube channel / Merchant Center |
| Meta | Added as an AI channel in the admin on September 8, 2026, with products shared by default | Direct checkout where activated | Shopify Catalog |
| Perplexity | Not part of Shopify's agentic storefronts docs; Perplexity's in-chat "Instant Buy" runs through PayPal | Inside Perplexity, for participating PayPal merchants | PayPal's merchant program |
A few details worth knowing:
- Copilot direct checkout has no extra fee. Shopify's help article says merchants pay only their standard payment processing fees. It is US-only, and subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products are not supported.
- Copilot enrollment was automatic. When Microsoft announced Copilot Checkout in January 2026, Shopify merchants were enrolled automatically after an opt-out window. If you never looked at this, look now.
- Google's checkout is narrower than its discovery. Google says UCP-powered checkout already reaches "hundreds of thousands of brands and retailers," but its Merchant Center help page still describes the checkout feature as available to select merchants in the US, Canada and Australia, with an interest form to join.
The plumbing, in plain English
You don't need to implement any of this yourself on Shopify, but knowing the names helps you read the news.
Shopify Catalog
Catalog is Shopify's product-data layer for AI channels. By default it shares each product's title, description, options, images, price and availability, and updates continuously. As of October 9, 2026, compare-at prices can also be shared, so agents can see markdowns. If your real product data lives in metafields or tags, Shopify Catalog Mapping lets you point Catalog at the right fields.
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol)
An open standard co-developed by Shopify and Google and announced in January 2026. It covers cart creation, checkout, payment and post-purchase steps so an agent can buy from a merchant without a custom integration for every pair. Copilot's checkout and Google's native checkout both run on it.
ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol)
OpenAI and Stripe released ACP in September 2025 alongside Instant Checkout. OpenAI's developer docs now describe two separate tracks: product feeds for discovery in ChatGPT, and a checkout spec with its own requirements. For Shopify merchants, Shopify already handles the ChatGPT connection.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers
These are the tool endpoints agents call. Shopify's developer docs list a Storefront Catalog MCP (search one store), a Global Catalog MCP (search across Shopify), and a Checkout MCP (create and manage checkout sessions). The older Storefront MCP is being retired in favor of UCP endpoints. This matters mostly if you're building a custom agent or app.
What happened to ChatGPT Instant Checkout
OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025 and named Shopify as a partner. By March 2026, OpenAI said the first version wasn't flexible enough. It moved to a discovery-first model where merchants use their own checkout. CNBC covered the change. The lesson for merchants: owning the checkout still matters, even when discovery happens inside an AI assistant.
My read: shoppers trust a brand's own checkout. Their saved payment methods are there, the return policy is visible, and Shop Pay is familiar. Agent checkout will get better, but don't rebuild your strategy around it yet. Make discovery work first.
Readiness checklist
When I review a store for agentic commerce, this is the order I work in:
- Check your status. Open Sales channels > Agentic. If your store is ineligible, Shopify shows the reason there.
- Fix product titles and descriptions. Agents read your text literally. Say what the product is, who it's for, materials, dimensions and use cases in plain language. Marketing-only copy ("elevate your everyday") gives an agent nothing to match against.
- Fill in category and attributes. Set the Shopify product category and its category metafields. Add GTINs where you have them.
- Map custom fields. If size charts, materials or specs live in metafields or metaobjects, set up Catalog Mapping so they're included.
- Keep price and inventory accurate. Wrong availability in an AI answer is worse than no answer. Audit oversold or "always in stock" items.
- Publish complete policies. Refund, privacy and terms of service policies are an eligibility requirement for some channels. Make return windows and shipping times explicit.
- Review your AI-facing FAQs. Shopify's free Knowledge Base app shows the FAQs that AI shopping agents use to answer questions about your store, and lets you edit them.
- Decide on direct checkout, channel by channel. If you sell subscriptions, bundles or personalized products, or you need your own post-purchase flow, think about whether direct checkout fits. You can turn it off per channel and still be discoverable.
- Hide what shouldn't be sold there. Setting a product to Unlisted removes it from AI channels, but also from sitemaps, search engines and on-site search. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt does not stop Catalog from sharing data.
- Set up attribution. Shopify shows channel or referrer attribution for AI orders in your admin. Build a simple monthly view so you can see whether this channel is growing.
Watch out: B2B setups built with third-party apps or theme code may not be detected as B2B-only, so wholesale items could appear in AI channels at the wrong price. If you run a blended store, check what's showing.
Is it worth paying attention to yet?
Shopify reports that AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8x year over year in Q1 2026, and orders from AI-powered searches rose nearly 13x. Those are Shopify's own numbers, and they start from a small base. For most stores, AI channels are still a small share of revenue.
The case for acting now isn't the current volume. The fixes above also improve your Google Shopping feed, your on-site search and your conversion rate. And if AI channels keep growing, the stores with clean data are the ones agents can recommend with confidence.
If you don't sell on Shopify, Shopify now offers an Agentic plan that lets businesses on other platforms add products to Shopify Catalog and sell through AI channels without moving their store. Shopify says there's no monthly subscription; you pay standard payment rates on sales.
FAQ
Do I need an app to sell in ChatGPT from Shopify?
No. Shopify's agentic storefronts channel shares eligible products through Shopify Catalog by default. Shoppers who click through complete the purchase on your own checkout.
Can I stop my products from appearing in AI channels?
Yes. You can turn off individual channels under Sales channels > Agentic, or set specific products to Unlisted. Products may still surface through regular web search.
Who owns the customer when someone buys inside Copilot?
You do. Shopify says you keep the customer relationship and the post-purchase experience, and the order appears in your admin with channel attribution.
Are there extra fees for AI checkout?
For Copilot direct checkout, Shopify says there are no extra fees beyond standard payment processing. Terms can change, so check the current Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms.
Is this available outside the US?
Mostly not yet. Shopify says purchasing across AI channels currently serves US buyers. Google's checkout program also lists Canada and Australia for select merchants.
